I think it was probably about two and a half years ago when, on the eve of an away game, Kelsey picked up an injury last minute. Having played in goal in field hockey since I was eleven, I could feel the eyes in the room turning expectantly towards me.

Unfortunately, the two jobs are really quite different! Only two things really transferred: having been fortunate enough to be coached by Olympic gold-winning captain Alex Danson, I had fear beaten out of me, and the art of coming out to cut down angles crossed over nicely too. But it still felt alien!

The rest, as they say, was history. Although on Kelsey’s return I was able to reprise my role on the blue line, I still have my pads ready for regular stand-in duty. I still walk the line between excitement and terror every time I dress for the net, but it’s a role that I’m glad to take on knowing that we are a more resilient team because of it!
